Case study

Backend API and data architecture for a large-scale financial-services acquisition

Solution Architect — Financial Industry2024

Context

Brought into a large, existing financial-services organization to support account-transfer features ahead of a major corporate acquisition/integration.

Problem

Complex, large-scale legacy data systems — high data volume and a large footprint of legacy code and systems to reason about and integrate with, under the time pressure of the upcoming integration.

Contribution

One piece of a larger cross-team effort (not solo). Researched and defined the datasets and models for the account-transfer API work; designed and onboarded the OpenAPI schema specification for the relevant API; built a Python validation service to validate API parameters and route orchestration-layer calls; implemented an events layer streaming into Snowflake data tables. Notably GCP cloud/backend architecture work, not frontend — Burton's usual specialty — chosen deliberately for the Work page as a demonstration of cross-discipline/full-stack range.

Outcome

Shipped successfully and held up under the acquisition's scale.
